FOURTEEN

There’d been a murder. There’d been an attempt made on my life and Tracy’s as well. And now, there was a threat on Jericho’s too. This was unlike any homicide case I’d ever worked. This wasn’t the work of a serial killer. It wasn’t a murder-suicide, a killing of a family member, or a hate crime. None of the homicides I’d investigated in my career resembled what was happening here. Was it greed? Jealousy? Wrath perhaps? Which of the deadly sins should we consider as a possible motive?

I only had the suspicions around Jim Witney to work with, given the history with his wife. His deceased wife. He’d lied to us about when he arrived in the Outer Banks. Did that mean he killed her? He had opportunity. But did he have a motive? And would he have attacked us to protect himself? These were the questions I couldn’t answer. Not yet. Not without knowing more.

It was just past twilight, the sky brushed the color of rust. We parked south of Kill Devil Hills, not far from Nags Head. I had a few blurry pictures transferred to my phone and the crude drawings of the coin tucked safely in my pocket. There was one person Jericho said we needed to see, that they might know what we were dealing with. A part of me wanted to dive as soon as possible and find the coin. In the mayhem of saving Jericho from drowning, the coin was lost, and the disappointment of losing it burned.

I don’t know where or when the coin went missing, but I imagined the daylight bleeding through the ocean and glinting off the gold as it fluttered back to the ocean’s bottom. I could still feel the outline of it too, the weight of it in my palm, the precious metal tingling with danger. Someone had been with us every minute of this case. They were with me and Tracy after we’d visited Janine Scott. They were with us during our dive when they tried to kill Jericho. I’m sure they were with Karol Witney too. But why? If greed was the motive, then why not just take the gold? There had to more to it and I was determined to find out what it was.

I reached over to Jericho and curled a lock of his long hair around my finger, a rush of gratitude touching my soul. The slur in his speech was gone, but his memory was still chock-full of holes. He was already talking about diving again, the thought of it rattling my nerves. I’m sure he could say the same about me driving, Tracy and me still nursing bumps and bruises. But diving was different. It was a different kind of danger. I didn’t know how to protect him, or us for that matter. We’d have to dive again to continue the investigation. For the next one, I’d enlist Emanuel to help. I was also thinking strongly about benching Jericho. Maybe have him sit out and stay on deck.
